My MA research looks at how illustrators use their creative practice to tell stories. Humankind has always illustrated its experience of the world from cave painting to anatomical drawing and maps of the stars. We put information into images because it makes it clearer.   Yet with the advent of photography, film and computers the illustrator's role is less explanatory year on year. We rely less on drawn images to decipher the world. Thus contemporary illustration often veers towards a more 'Fine Art' sensibility whilst simultaneously occupying a more functional space within 'Design'. I have opted to base my illustration work around objects. By which I specifically mean ‘treasures’; things that are functionless yet emotionally powerful, the material residue of memory and experience. This decision was based around, not only, a personal interest in private narratives but also the hope that the stories offered to me would be varied enough to provide a wealth of visual approaches. Objects and illustration each help us reveal or decipher stories. By pairing the two strands I wish to better understand the language of illustration; its strengths, weaknesses and peculiarities. Through drawing and painting as well as 2D,3D and motion work I am investigating whether images might demonstrate notions such as memory, nostalgia and loss, how I as an illustrator might develop my own visual language to tell these stories.
